Brighton: Exciting news for the Hollingbury area! Work is kicking off on 12 new council homes as part of a project called New Homes for Neighbourhoods. The council is really stepping up to tackle housing needs.

They’re planning to build nine flats where the old Hollingbury Library used to be, plus three family houses nearby. It’s all about providing affordable homes for those on the city’s housing register.

Once these homes are ready, they’ll be available through Homemove, which helps match people in need with available rentals. The flats will have one or two bedrooms, making them perfect for small families or individuals.

Demolition of the old library is set to start soon, and construction is expected to begin in February. The new developments will also feature a cycle store, car club parking, and even a roof garden for residents to enjoy.

Over in Rotherfield Crescent, three three-bedroom houses will replace some old garages. Demolition is already underway, and they’re hoping to start building in the spring.

To make things quicker and less disruptive, some parts of the homes will be made off-site. Plus, they’re including electric vehicle charging points and gardens designed to boost local wildlife.

In the city center, four new council homes are almost finished on Frederick Street, with completion expected by the end of February. Since 2013, over 250 new homes have been built through this program, and there’s more to come!

Councillor Gill Williams is excited about these developments, emphasizing the importance of providing high-quality, energy-efficient homes. It’s all part of a bigger plan to increase council housing in Brighton.
