The Wyre Forest Council has filed a retrospective application for the demolition of a bakery deemed unsafe in Stourport
Stourport: The local council had to take down an old bakery on Raven Street. They said it was in terrible shape and posed a real danger to people.
They filed a retrospective planning application after getting a Dangerous Structure Notice. A structural report showed the building was at risk of collapsing.
The council explained they acted under the Building Act 1984. They pointed out that a past case gave them the green light to proceed. The demolition happened on November 11.
In their application, they mentioned they needed permission for the demolition in a conservation area. They argued it was necessary for public safety and to make the best use of public funds.
Clearing the site is expected to improve the area’s look and significance, which is a plus for the conservation area.
However, the Stourport Civic Society isn’t happy. They’ve lodged a formal complaint, asking the council to investigate the demolition and what can be done to protect the site.
Andrew Booton, the civic society’s chairman, said the council has “destroyed our heritage” and hurt the integrity of the conservation area.
A council spokesperson said they’ve acknowledged the complaint and will follow their complaints procedure. They added it wouldn’t be right to comment while the process is ongoing.
