Lancashire: When someone dies without a will and no family is found, their estate goes to the Treasury. This is called ‘Bona Vacantia’.

Estates can include property, personal items, or money. If you think you might be related to someone who passed away, you could claim their estate.

In Lancashire, there are still some unclaimed estates. You might be entitled to a share if you have a family connection.

To check if you could inherit, type your name on the Government’s website. The list of unclaimed estates is updated daily.

Claims for estates can be made within 12 years of the Crown taking possession. For estates before 1997, claims can be made up to 30 years after death.

Who Can Claim an Unclaimed Estate?

If someone dies without a valid will, the following people can claim the estate:

  • Husband, wife, or civil partner
  • Children and grandchildren
  • Parents
  • Siblings and their children
  • Half-siblings and their children
  • Grandparents
  • Aunts, uncles, and their children
  • Half-aunts and half-uncles

If you’re a first cousin, you can only claim if no closer relatives exist. For more information on claiming an estate, visit the UK Government website.
