Residents share fond memories of Dunfermline’s High Street and its iconic shops
Dunfermline: The Saxone building is now home to Carlucci restaurant, and the Coop shops nearby have been torn down. It’s all open green space leading to the bus station now.
Bob Steele reminisces about his trips to Dunfermline: “I remember going with my mum to get new shoes from Saxone. It was a long bus ride from Glenrothes, but worth it for those memories.”
Isabel Cockburn has a special memory tied to Saxone too: “I bought a pair of red high heels there in 1964. They were so different from the usual black or brown ones. I wore them the night I met my husband at the Kinema Ballroom!”
Tom Rintoul also has fond recollections: “Just looking at this photo brings back good memories. The first floor above Saxone was storage, and we lived on the second floor.”
“Back then, I went to Canmore School. My parents later moved to Craigmyle Street, and I continued at Canmore before heading to High School.”
William Jack remembers his time at McLean Primary School in the early 1940s: “There were allotments across from the school, and the houses along the street were eventually demolished.”
“My family lived at 91 Baldridgeburn, right by the girl’s playground. We were a family of five in a small flat with no electricity, just gas lighting and a coal fire.”
“We had a shared toilet under the stairs, and a coal house and wash house out back. It was a different time, for sure.”
Rosslyn Anne Osinski recalls her first school experience: “It was over 70 years ago, but I still remember Miss Jardine and Mr. Chalmers, the headmaster.”
