Three MPs urge London’s Mayor to address A20 speeding fines after a speed limit change left drivers with penalties due to poor signage.
Drivers received speeding tickets, and they did not know the limit was lower. The A20 limit changed due to flooding, and TfL made the change in October 2023.
The speed went from 70mph to 40mph due to what they called an “emergency” order. Simon got a ticket at 54mph, thinking the limit remained at 50mph, and he saw smaller 40mph signs later. Simon said the road was once 70mph, then it dropped to 50mph, and then to 40mph.
Simon faces penalties for speeding, despite a clean record. The MPs claim the fines show poor signage as drivers did not see the new limit.
Many got multiple fines unknowingly because they used the road daily. The fines caused job losses and license suspensions.
The MPs state that many drivers went under 50mph, and constituents believe the temporary signs were bad. They want the Mayor to address this issue, even though the A20 speed limits are now back to normal.
The MPs feel the fines are unfair and believe that the signs were not good enough. They say some constituents face life changes due to the temporary limit and deem this unacceptable.
Thomas Turrell wants an inquiry and an independent look at TfL actions. He asks if TfL met all rules, if the signs followed the Road Traffic Signs Manual, and if the cameras met legal standards.
Turrell sent a letter to the Mayor, stating it as a concern for his voters. He wants a fast reply and will publish it.
News sources asked TfL about the A20 fines. They inquired about signage details, incorrect signs, an independent review, and fairness.
TfL stated that safety is its top goal, and they lowered the limit due to flooding. They said new compliant signs were installed and claim that all signs met the proper rules.
The response did not address sign visibility, nor did it confirm the investigation. They continue to face questions about the fines.
