The government supports major projects but remains silent on the A66 dualling scheme
Construction on the A66 upgrade is expected to start in early 2025. This project aims to turn the 50-mile stretch into a dual carriageway. It will also improve safety and capacity along the route.
Rishi Sunak, the MP for Northallerton and Richmond, has been advocating for this upgrade. He warned that delays leave residents uncertain and increase the risk of accidents. He believes the project is ready to go and is crucial for the North of England’s economy.
Councillor Angus Thompson also emphasized the importance of the A66 upgrade. He stated that it’s a vital route for HGVs and must not be delayed. He expressed frustration over the slow progress, partly due to a legal challenge from a transport group.
Recently, the Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal regarding this legal challenge. The Transport Action Network wanted to contest a High Court decision, but their request was rejected.
After the election, the new Labour Government put the A66 project under review, citing financial issues left by the previous administration. National Highways is currently working on utility diversions and surveys while waiting for the government’s spending review outcome.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves mentioned that these upgrades will enhance safety and connectivity across the North. The Department of Transport is considering the A66 scheme alongside other UK projects in their multi-year spending review. They plan to release a ten-year transport plan in the spring.
A spokesperson from the Department for Transport reiterated their commitment to road safety and infrastructure development. They aim to reduce road casualties and support economic growth across the North.
