Cllr Alan Amos has left the Conservative Party, citing online abuse and unpaid election expenses as key reasons for his decision to go independent.
Amos has been vocal about his frustrations, calling the local Conservative Association a “moribund carcass.” He believes the party is losing members and that Worcester might soon be a “Tory-free zone.”
He’s been dealing with a lot of negativity from within his own party, which he says has made it hard to continue. Cllr Marc Bayliss, the chair of the local Conservative Association, responded by saying Amos still owes money for his election expenses and that his departure isn’t a big loss.
Amos, who has served as a county councillor and was once the Mayor of Worcester, shared that this decision wasn’t easy. He felt it was a release after facing months of personal attacks from party members, especially after the last city council election.
He expressed disappointment over the lack of support from fellow Conservatives, stating he received no congratulations after his election, just public abuse. Amos also mentioned that he saw a need for change in leadership but faced pushback when he tried to take on a more prominent role.
He’s determined to fight for his community, saying he can’t just sit back and watch the local area suffer due to the chaos within the party. Now, as an independent, he plans to continue advocating for the people of Worcester.
