Ipswich Borough Council’s new parking fees have sparked outrage among fans, raising over £41,000 during December’s home games
The new fee kicked in for the match against Crystal Palace on December 3. Fans first noticed the signs before the Manchester United game, and the council raked in £14,327.50 from that match alone. They also collected £9,314.10, £8,336.10, and £9,787.15 from games against Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Chelsea, respectively.
When asked about the backlash, the council chose not to comment. Long-time fan Richard Tricker, who’s 65, expressed his frustration, calling the situation “criminal and greedy.”
He pointed out that while they want people to visit Ipswich for shopping, they’re also hitting fans with extra costs. Richard, a retired builder and Blues supporter for 60 years, said it’s ridiculous to charge more when the town is already bustling on game days.
He added that for away fans, the costs can pile up quickly. If they’re not taking public transport, they could easily spend around £200. Richard mentioned that he tries to car share to save money, but that extra £15 on top of the ticket price is still a tough pill to swallow.
