Angus Council tenants may see a 5.2% rent increase as part of budget plans. Most tenants support the rise for housing improvements.
The council asked tenants about rent options. Over 75% of respondents supported the 5.2% increase. However, only 357 tenants responded, which is less than 5% of all tenants.
A new housing committee will consider the rise and meets on Tuesday to discuss it. Approval means average rent would be £84.91, which is £4.16 higher than last year’s £80.75. Last year saw a 6.7% rise deemed necessary.
This year’s suggested rise includes inflation plus 3.5%. Garage rents could also increase by 5.2%. Pitches at St Christopher’s Travellers site might rise too.
Finance director Ian Lorimer wrote a report that says rents used to rise with CPI plus 1%. CPI has been very high lately, but rent rises stayed below CPI to help tenants who faced a cost-of-living crisis.
Officials claim the rise allows housing improvements including a contract for over 750 new bathrooms after the council ended a previous bathroom deal. They also plan £750,000 yearly kitchen upgrades.
The council will decide on rents soon before the budget meeting on February 27. Angus Council faces a £9.5 million budget shortfall this year.
