Anna Dixon MP highlights the urgent need for improved SEND support in schools
Anna has visited many local schools and is inspired by the dedication of teachers. They work hard to support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Schools like Myrtle Park Primary and Beckfoot School in Bingley show great examples of this effort.
However, Anna points out that many students are let down by the current system. Since her election last July, she has heard from many parents about the struggles they face. They describe a system in crisis, with long waits for support and assessments.
Some children travel hours in taxis to get to school. Others in mainstream education lack the resources they need to learn. These stories are heartbreaking and highlight the urgent need for change.
According to Bradford Council, over 14,000 children in the district receive SEND support. This is nearly 14% of all students. Yet, accessing this support can feel like a battle for many parents.
Earlier this month, the Public Accounts Committee released a report on SEND provision in England. The findings were concerning, showing that the system often favors parents who can navigate its complexities.
The committee recommended that the Government better understand the growing demand for SEND support. They also suggested clearer guidelines for what children and parents should expect.
Fortunately, the new Labour Government is addressing these issues. Last autumn, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced an additional £1 billion per year for SEND services.
This funding is a significant step, but the Government is also making changes to ensure no child is left behind. They are investing in SEND facilities in mainstream schools and changing Ofsted inspections to evaluate SEND effectiveness.
The crisis in SEND support is serious, but there is hope for improvement. The Labour Government is working to transform the lives of families with children needing special support.
It’s crucial to act now to ensure children receive the help they need to succeed in education and reach their full potential.
