Batley reveals a £14.5m plan to revitalize the town, inviting public input on key design elements
Batley: Exciting news for the town! They’ve just unveiled plans for a £14.5 million revitalization project. The council is asking locals to help shape the final details, which is pretty cool.
This project is a big deal, funded by both the government and local sources. It’s part of a long-term vision from Kirklees Council to breathe new life into the town center. They want to make it more connected and inviting for everyone.
So, what’s in the works? First up is Market Place, which is considered the historical heart of Batley. The design aims to honor the town’s heritage while making it more accessible and friendly for pedestrians. They’re planning to reduce the number of bollards and add some greenery.
Then there’s Brunswick Street, which has been a bit neglected. The council plans to make it more user-friendly, with new steps and railings. Plus, they’re adding planters to help with drainage during rainy days.
Commercial Street is also getting a makeover. They want to make it more pedestrian-friendly, with raised crossings and wider pavements. It’ll be a great spot for events and markets, with more seating and greenery.
There’s also a new area called the Commercial Link, which will connect Tesco’s car park to Commercial Street. It’ll be a lovely green space with seating and a heritage wall celebrating Batley’s community.
As for the middle of Commercial Street, they’re moving the road a bit to widen the pavement for outdoor dining and play areas. Wards Hill will see better connections to Commercial Street, plus a new cycle route.
Lastly, the eastern side of Commercial Street will be closed to vehicles, making it safer for pedestrians. The council is really focused on creating a vibrant, welcoming environment.
Councillor Graham Turner expressed excitement about the community’s input throughout this process. He encourages everyone to check out the designs in January, either online or in person.
The design team, led by Influence Landscape Planning and Design, has worked hard to incorporate feedback from the community over the past few years. They’re eager to hear final thoughts from locals.
Shona Hatton from the design team highlighted Batley’s strengths, like its lively nightlife and diverse community. She believes this project is a fantastic opportunity to renew the town center and create a bright future.
The funding for this project comes from a mix of government and local sources, totaling around £14.5 million. Public consultations are now open, running until January 27, with an in-person viewing at Batley Town Hall on January 18.
