Residents of Bedwas are concerned as plans could lead to the closure of their beloved library and leisure centre due to budget cuts
It’s a real bummer for the community. The leisure centre is one of three sites on the chopping block, while the library is among ten that could shut down. The council is trying to fill a massive £45 million budget gap, and these services are at risk.
Liz Aldworth, a local Labour councillor, expressed her sadness about the situation. She mentioned how these places are cherished by the community. It’s not just about losing facilities; it’s about the impact on residents and schools who might have to travel further for services.
The leisure centre, built back in 1974, needs a hefty amount of maintenance, which the council estimates will cost over £334,000 in the next five years. Aldworth encourages everyone to voice their opinions during the consultation period.
Other leisure centres in nearby areas are also under threat. The council claims it has the most leisure centres of any Welsh authority but is struggling financially. Shane Williams, another Labour councillor, called the closure plans “absurd” and questioned the decision-making process.
He pointed out that Blackwood, as a principal town, shouldn’t lose two leisure centres. Local schools are worried about how they’ll manage transporting students if these facilities close.
Residents have been vocal about their concerns, and Williams hopes the council will listen. He even suggested that if Bedwas Leisure Centre closes, the savings could be redirected to support Cefn Fforest, which has more users.
If these closures happen, the council could save around £1.1 million over the next few years. The good news is that the 3G pitch at Bedwas High School will remain open, managed by Caerphilly Leisure Centre.
The council hasn’t clarified what this means for schools needing to transport kids to swimming pools further away. A consultation period for the future of libraries starts on January 22, with several drop-in sessions planned.
There’s also a consultation for leisure centres opening on the same day. It’s a crucial time for the community to get involved and share their thoughts on these important local services.
