Birmingham: ISRA-UK has been on the ground in Gaza since 2007, delivering truckloads of essential supplies like food, water, and hygiene products. They’re all about helping people survive.

With the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the charity is ready to ramp up its efforts. Saraya Hussain, the managing director, mentioned that while the release of hostages is a good sign, the real work starts now. They need to support those who’ve been displaced.

In March, ISRA-UK plans to send two teams to Cairo, one male and one female, to help get aid into Gaza. Saraya pointed out that the trauma these people have faced will stick with them for life.

She emphasized the need to rebuild basic needs and provide psychological support. It’s heartbreaking to think of Gaza as the “world’s largest graveyard,” a term she used to describe the dire situation.

The ceasefire began on January 19, allowing for the return of hostages and the release of Palestinian prisoners. The first three hostages freed were young adults, and Israel also released 90 Palestinians that day.

Amerah Saleh and Aisha Bibi, both from Birmingham, have been busy packing hygiene kits in Egypt for women in Gaza. The charity has faced challenges getting aid through due to tightened entry points.

Ms. Hussain stressed that the people in Gaza are on the brink of famine, lacking access to healthcare and basic living conditions. She called for humanitarian assistance to be allowed back into Gaza.

Having worked in Palestine for over 40 years, ISRA-UK hopes to operate freely soon, so they can collaborate with local NGOs to set up a recovery plan.
