Sam Rushworth is pushing for more funding to help rural schools facing tough times
During a recent debate in Parliament, he pointed out that many primary schools are facing tough times. With fewer kids enrolling, schools are losing funding, which makes it hard for them to survive. He asked for a new funding plan specifically for rural schools to help them out.
Some schools in Teesdale have already merged or closed because they just can’t keep up. For instance, Rookhope Primary, the smallest in County Durham, shut down last year with only five students. It’s a real worry for the community.
The debate also touched on other issues rural areas face, like access to healthcare. Environment Minister Daniel Zeichner acknowledged that local schools are just one of many challenges for smaller communities. He mentioned that people in these areas often struggle to get to GPs and dentists, which is a big concern.
Labour is stepping up, promising £1.3 billion in funding for local governments to help keep essential services running. Zeichner reassured everyone that the government is committed to making sure rural communities have the services they need.
