Blackburn Council prepares for potential human remains discovery during church site redevelopment
The church, a Grade II listed building, will become part of a new Tech Innovation Quarter. This project aims to create office spaces and meeting rooms, contributing to Blackburn’s £250 million town center master plan.
The church was once home to the Bureau Centre for the Arts. The fire in 2019 caused significant damage, but now there’s a plan to restore it. The redevelopment will include 9,000 square feet of office space over four floors.
Before work starts, an archaeological plan is in place. If any bodies are found, they will be reburied under the supervision of the Blackburn Diocese. The goal is to ensure all remains are treated with care and respect.
The churchyard has historical significance, containing the remains of notable figures like Daniel Thwaites, founder of a famous brewery. The council is working closely with the Coroner’s Office to handle any discoveries properly.
A council spokesperson emphasized that moving remains is a last resort. They are committed to preserving the church’s history while integrating it into the new Tech Innovation District, which includes plans for education and skills development.
