Blackburn: Cllr Phil Riley discussed the grit bin issue during a council meeting. He acknowledged that empty grit bins in cold weather are a challenge for the town hall.

Cllr Riley assured Cllr Sajid Ali that they would review the volunteer grit squads. These squads help staff clear snow and keep roads safe.

Cllr Ali raised concerns about the grit bins. He mentioned that many residents struggle with icy side streets. He noted that the council has 400 grit bins but receives standard replies when they ask for help.

Cllr Riley explained that they were prepared, but the bins were quickly emptied. He mentioned that filling 475 bins is a big task. Unfortunately, some people take the grit for personal use, leaving bins empty.

He emphasized that grit bins are only a priority during winter. For the rest of the year, they are often overlooked. Cllr Riley agreed that a review of the grit squads is necessary to improve their effectiveness.
