Bluecoat Primary School is making waves with its new wheelchair sports program, promoting inclusivity and understanding among students.
Antonia De Pinto, the PE lead, shared how this new program showcases the school’s commitment to inclusivity. She believes that these lessons can really help kids grow physically, emotionally, and socially. It’s all about understanding and accepting differences.
The students are already chatting about what it’s like to be disabled, which is a big step in breaking down barriers. Isla, a year 6 student, mentioned how this experience helps people see the challenges wheelchair users face. Another student, Hannah, loves the lessons because they offer everyone a chance to try something new.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support inclusive education at Bluecoat. Antonia emphasized that early exposure to inclusive sports helps kids appreciate diversity. They’re currently learning how to maneuver in wheelchairs and practicing fun activities like throwing and catching. By the end of the term, they’ll even have a wheelchair basketball game!
Plus, there’s a disabilities football session happening at Stamford Welland Academy, which is another great opportunity for kids to get involved. You can book it online if you’re interested!
