Residents are frustrated as the upcoming meeting with Lord Hendy is invitation only, limiting community access to important discussions.
Oxford: So, there’s this meeting happening soon with Lord Hendy about the Botley Road situation. But guess what? It’s invitation only! That’s got a lot of folks riled up.
Network Rail has been busy with a big project at the Oxford station, which has caused the road to be closed since April 2023. It was supposed to be done by October last year, but delays have kept it shut.
Layla Moran, the local MP, had a chat with Lord Hendy and the CEO of Network Rail back in December. They’re coming to town this Friday, but only a select few can join in on the discussions.
Community activist Julian Le Vay is not happy about this. He’s been vocal about how the road closure has affected local lives. He even published a booklet sharing residents’ frustrations.
He mentioned that the way this meeting is set up feels a bit controlling. It’s like they’re trying to keep the locals out while they come to our community center. Not the best look for them, right?
Julian also pointed out that some residents who want to attend will be turned away. That’s bound to stir up some anger. Plus, there’s a protest planned outside the community center with banners and all.
He hopes Lord Hendy will finally give a timeline for when the Botley Road will reopen. Fingers crossed it’s soon! But he’s also expecting some heated questions during the meeting.
Layla hasn’t said much about the meeting arrangements, but she’s glad the higher-ups are coming to hear from the community. It’s about time residents get a say in what’s happening.
Network Rail has said they’re inviting a mix of people, including those who’ve been involved in the project. But it still feels a bit exclusive, doesn’t it?
As for the Department for Transport, they haven’t chimed in yet. It’s a bit of a wait-and-see game now.
