The Bradford Interchange plaza is nearing completion, with final touches expected this month after some delays in the initial reopening
Bradford: The bus station at the Interchange opened at the start of the month, but not everything was finished. They created a new plaza, replacing the old taxi rank, but there was no seating or street furniture yet.
Some repairs to the roof were also still pending when the station reopened on January 5. At a recent Bradford Council meeting, they mentioned that while the station is mostly operational, there are still repairs that the West Yorkshire Combined Authority will tackle soon.
Last year, they announced plans for a new pedestrian plaza at the front of the station. It’s supposed to have trees, plants, seating areas, and signs to help people find their way around the city.
This project is funded by the Transforming Cities Fund, which the Conservative Government allocated to Bradford for walking and cycling improvements. Initially, they expected the plaza work to wrap up by early 2025, just in time for Bradford’s City of Culture year.
Even though the plaza was paved and opened, it lacked the promised planters and seating. During a council meeting, Councillor Rebecca Poulsen asked about the reopening and any lingering issues.
They reported that the reopening went well, despite some service disruptions from heavy snowfall. The station is now mostly operational, but a few repairs are still in the works.
They noted that a lift had some breakdowns but is now working fine. Repairs to the atrium ceiling were delayed due to icy conditions that made it hard to access the roof.
Ongoing resurfacing of the bus deck, which started before the station closed for safety reasons in January 2024, is expected to continue until April.
As for the planned art in the station and plaza, they mentioned that more vinyl artwork will be added inside soon, and the external seating will be installed this month.
When the Telegraph & Argus checked in on Thursday, they saw that some seating had finally been put in the plaza.
