Brentwood will lose its two PCSOs due to a £5.3 million funding shortfall
Brentwood: Essex Police is cutting all 99 PCSOs due to funding issues. This means Brentwood will lose its two PCSOs.
Roger Hirst, the police and crime commissioner, announced the cuts. He said they are necessary because of a £5.3 million funding shortfall.
Hirst warned that these cuts will hurt crime-fighting efforts. He blamed the government for not providing enough funding.
Recently, the government promised £100 million to recruit more neighborhood officers. However, this funding does not help Essex Police’s current situation.
Hirst expressed frustration, saying the cuts contradict the government’s commitment to safer streets. He noted that the funding they receive leads to downsizing, not growth.
Despite an increase in council tax, there is still a £12 million gap. Hirst emphasized that PCSOs play a vital role in community safety.
He mentioned that police constables have more powers, so they must prioritize keeping officers. The cuts reverse years of investment in Essex Police.
Since 2016, crime rates have dropped significantly in Essex. However, Hirst fears these cuts will slow down progress in reducing crime.
Essex Police is facing a £5.3 million shortfall, even after budget adjustments. Hirst had to consider drastic measures to balance the budget.
He expressed disappointment that the government wants to invest but does not provide the necessary funding. A Home Office spokesperson stated they are committed to community safety.
