Buckhurst Field in Swindon is set for major upgrades with £600k funding secured for new facilities, including a skate park and play zone.
The improvement work started in early 2024 and will cost around £600,000. Now, nearly a year later, more funding has come in.
They secured £155,830 for the skate park upgrade, £75,500 for the play zone, and £70,000 for the sports pavilion redevelopment. This funding is from The Oakfield Community Fund, managed by Swindon Borough Council.
Councillor Emma Bushell, Deputy Leader of Swindon Borough Council, expressed excitement about the investment. She believes these facilities will greatly benefit young people in the community.
She also mentioned her pride in the investment secured for local projects. The Buckhurst Field Improvement Programme builds on previous work at the Moredon Sporting Hub.
So far, the play area has been refurbished, the grass football pitches improved, and the Shrewsbury Road car park resurfaced. Work on the pavilion, which will serve as a clubhouse for Robins FC, is currently underway.
Development of the play zone and skate park will begin once plans are approved. The new skate park will feature an inclusive design for various activities like skateboarding and BMX.
Public feedback indicated a need for more bins and benches near the skate park, which will be included in the plans.
Councillor Steve Allsop from the Park North and Walcot ward is thrilled to see these projects moving forward. He believes the new facilities will create modern spaces for everyone to enjoy sports and recreation.
He reassured residents that their feedback has been taken into account, and he is confident these upgrades will make Buckhurst Field a top sporting destination in South Swindon.
