Swindon: The new Shrewsbury Road Pavilion is finally getting built, and it’s about time! This project is expected to wrap up in about four months.

When it’s done, the old changing rooms will be transformed into a cozy clubhouse for the Robins Football Club. They’ll have a kitchen, updated changing areas, and even a mini-depot for the South Swindon Parish Council staff.

Paul Wainwright, the chair of Swindon Robins FC, is super excited. He believes this new spot will help create a real sense of community among players, families, and fans.

He mentioned that since they started in 1991, they’ve been bouncing around different pitches and facilities. Now, they’ll finally have a proper home base!

The new pavilion will be a great headquarters, and with the grass pitches getting a makeover, teams from under-7s to under-18s will have a fantastic place to play every week.

This project is a big deal for the community. Councillor Linda Kasmaty said it’s the largest investment in recreation facilities ever for South Swindon.

She’s thrilled to partner with the borough council and welcomes the Robins FC to Buckhurst as their new home ground.

Overall, this construction is part of a larger improvement plan for Buckhurst Field, which is set to cost around £600,000.

The plans, first shared in June 2024, include not just the clubhouse but also restored football pitches, a rebuilt skatepark, a new cycleway, and a tarmacked car park.

It’s all about enhancing the sports and recreation facilities for everyone in the area. The changing rooms next to New College’s 3G pitches will be turned into a pavilion, giving local clubs a solid home base.

Starting from the 24/25 season, both the Swindon Robins and the Swindon Spitfires, a women’s and girls’ football team, will be training and playing their home matches at the field.

While the clubhouse is being built, the parish councillors are also moving ahead with plans to redevelop the Buckhurst Skate Park, which is set to kick off in February 2025.
