High Wycombe: Recently, some mattresses were left on Priory Avenue, and folks are not happy about it. One resident even called it a ‘disgusting eyesore’.

As of now, those mattresses are still sitting there. The council can’t just swoop in and take them away since they’re on private land. But Thomas Broom, who’s in charge of Climate Change and the Environment for the council, has some advice for anyone who spots stuff like this.

He mentioned that fly-tipping is a real problem and that Buckinghamshire Council is serious about tackling it. Unfortunately, since these mattresses are on private property, they can’t clear them up. But they’re ready to help residents learn how to get rid of such items the right way.

Thomas said, “We’ll share info about our bulky waste collection service.” He also pointed out that there have been other fly-tipping incidents in the area, and they’re committed to investigating those cases.

Last July, the council upped the fine for littering from £150 to £500, and it could go as high as £2,500 for more serious offenses. They want to make it clear that there are consequences for littering.

People can also report any litter or waste through the Fix My Street website, which helps the council keep track of illegal dumping. Thomas added, “We’re serious about this and want everyone to know their responsibilities when it comes to waste.”

He concluded by saying, “Fly-tipping is selfish and irresponsible, and we won’t stand for it.”
