Friends of a teen who tragically died in Magaluf are raising awareness to prevent similar incidents and keep her memory alive
Magaluf: Erin Montgomery and her friends started the ‘Don’t Leave a Friend Behind’ campaign after her best friend, Natalie Cormack, fell seven floors while trying to climb onto a ledge from another apartment.
Natalie, just 19, was found hours later on a restaurant terrace at the Eden Roc resort. Erin, now 25, shared with the Glasgow Times how Natalie’s loss still affects her and their friends nearly seven years later.
She reminisced, “Natalie was the life of the party, and we miss her every day. It’s hard to believe she’s gone. We talked on Facetime the night before, and she was so excited about life.”
Erin feels grateful for the memories but is determined to honor Natalie’s legacy. “I know she’d be proud that we’re helping prevent tragedies like hers. This campaign is saving lives, and we want to keep it going.”
Thanks to their efforts, the Eden Roc apartments made safety improvements, and awareness posters around the complex have reportedly reduced balcony falls among tourists.
Erin explained, “After losing Natalie, we wanted to make a difference. We brainstormed ideas and created these impactful posters to remind everyone to never leave a friend behind.”
She emphasized the importance of responsible drinking and looking out for friends while traveling. “We want everyone to be aware, not just in Magaluf but anywhere they go. If we can save even one life, it’s worth it.”
To remember Natalie on April 27, Erin plans to place flowers at her grave in West Kilbride. “As summer approaches, people will be booking holidays. We want them to remember to look out for each other and avoid risks.”
“We never thought something like this could happen to Natalie, but I believe she’d be proud of our campaign. We want to prevent others from experiencing the heartache her family and friends have felt. We’ll keep raising awareness to ensure her memory lives on.”
