A petition to reinstate Sue Frost as manager of The Wellington Inn gains traction, highlighting community concerns over the pub’s closure.
Fishergate: The Wellington Inn in Alma Terrace closed its doors last November, and folks are not happy about it. Regulars are rallying together, pushing for the return of manager Sue Frost and the reopening of their beloved pub.
It’s been a tough time for the pub, which has seen a string of closures. Local councillor Conrad Whitcroft even chimed in, calling it a “thriving centre of the community.” He’s written to the brewery, urging them to reconsider their decision.
On January 14, a petition was launched to bring Sue back, and it’s already gathered over 190 signatures. Shelby Chaney, who started the petition, described Sue as a warm and caring person who went above and beyond for the pub.
She even used her own cash to host events and spruce up the beer garden. Shelby mentioned that the closure felt sudden and left a noticeable void in the community. Many regulars, especially older ones, relied on the pub for social interaction.
Since the closure, the street has felt eerily quiet. Shelby noted that a lot of people have been staying home, missing the vibrant atmosphere the pub used to bring. She believes that when Sue was managing, the place was always buzzing with patrons.
It’s clear that Sue’s passion for The Wellington Inn made a real difference. The Press has reached out to Samuel Smith’s Brewery for their take on the petition, and we’re all waiting to hear back.
