David Hall discusses rising costs and the restaurant’s recent move to Ocean Village
Southampton: David Hall opened Casa Brasil in 2013. He has years of experience as a chef in London. He previously opened Italian restaurants too.
Recently, Casa Brasil moved from Westquay South to Ironside House in Ocean Village. This change was necessary due to rising costs.
David mentioned that utility bills have skyrocketed. He had to absorb extra costs to keep prices reasonable for customers.
He said, “If I kept prices from 2016, it would cost £50 per person. We’ve managed to keep it at £37.”
Electricity bills alone tripled, going from £2,500 to £7,500 monthly. David noted that commercial bills are much higher than home bills.
He also pointed out that the Ukraine war caused prices to soar. For example, a box of pasta jumped from £18 to £54.
All the meat at Casa Brasil is 100% British or Irish. Pork and poultry come from Owton’s Butchers in Botley.
David insists on quality meat. He believes that if the meat is tough or dry, customers won’t return.
He explained that moving from the old Westquay location was planned for a while. A forfeiture notice was seen on the old unit’s door.
David faced a £3.6 million commitment to get out of a 20-year lease. Covid made it harder, as landlords removed break clauses.
He feels that small, independent restaurateurs struggle against large corporations. All 75 staff members moved to the new location.
Casa Brasil closed in Westquay on January 5 and reopened in Ocean Village on January 22, just two weeks later.
