Castletown: A retired civil engineer, David Wilcock, found himself in hot water after a risky overtaking move. He was fined £500 for careless driving.

At 92 years old, Wilcock pleaded guilty in Wick Sheriff Court. His charge was downgraded from dangerous driving, which is a relief, I guess.

On July 31 last year, police were doing speed checks near Biggins Farm. They saw Wilcock speeding up to overtake another car, even with a Corsa coming right at him.

The poor driver in the Corsa had to slam on the brakes to avoid a crash. The police quickly followed Wilcock and pulled him over.

In court, it came out that Wilcock thought the Corsa was going slower than it actually was. He figured he had enough space to make the move.

His solicitor mentioned that he’s a first-time offender and has been driving without issues for ages. He’s not on any medication either, so that’s something.

Sheriff Wilson acknowledged Wilcock’s early plea but pointed out that it was still a serious offense. He also accepted a not guilty plea for another charge related to failing to stop for the police.
