Worcestershire: So, there’s been a pretty sad situation at Chandler Court Care Home. An inquest looked into the death of Edith Theresa Pye, and it turns out she died from an accidental fall. But here’s the kicker—neglect played a part in it too.

The coroner, David Reid, was pretty clear about it. He even sent a report to the care home’s owners, highlighting the need for better care practices. After the inquest, Nicky Cahill, the regional director for Care UK, stepped up to apologize to Mrs. Pye’s family. She admitted that the care provided didn’t meet their standards.

It all started back on March 29, 2024, when Mrs. Pye fractured her knee after rolling off her bed. She was supposed to have at least two staff members with her, but only one was there. That’s a big no-no, right?

Things got worse when the inquest revealed that Mrs. Pye had a leg amputated and later developed a chest infection. She returned to the home for end-of-life care and sadly passed away on April 28.

The coroner raised some serious concerns about the care plan. It was vague and didn’t clearly state that she needed two carers for personal hygiene. The staff member on duty that day knew he should have had help but often worked alone and hadn’t even read the care plan.

It gets even messier. Other staff members didn’t know about key parts of the care plan either. They knew he should have had a buddy but didn’t tell anyone in charge. Plus, the morning handover notes didn’t highlight what each resident needed, and there was no system to check those notes.

Mr. Reid was really worried about the lack of solid measures at the care home to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again. The care home has until February 14 to respond to the coroner’s concerns and explain what they’re doing to fix things.
