Charlton: The Maryon Wilson Animal Park is facing closure. The community is stepping up to save it. Families and schools have relied on this park for years. A new campaign group is determined to keep it open.

The council plans to save £60,000 by 2028. But moving 93 animals could cut savings to just £5,000 over four years. The community must submit a business plan to keep the park running.

Residents are upset and ready to act. Last Sunday, 250 people met with councillors to discuss the closure. A petition to save the park has over 10,000 signatures already.

Campaigner Gary Dark shared that this movement is community-driven. He noted the strong turnout and support. He believes the council needs to listen to the community’s concerns.

Gary emphasized the need for real communication. He said the council and community should work together, not against each other. The park is home to many animals and offers free access to nature.

Jane Laws, another community member, pointed out the park’s educational value. Eleven local schools use it for lessons on ecology and more. For families on a budget, the park is a great alternative to expensive attractions.

Many residents shared personal stories about the park. One woman recalled bringing her kids to see the animals every Christmas. Another shared how the park helped her family after moving from abroad.

Gary mentioned the tight timeline for creating a business plan. Jane added that it’s not fair to expect residents to do this work. The council should handle it, as they have the resources.

Christine Anthony, chair of Friends of Maryon Park, has been involved for 20 years. She recalled past attempts to close the park. Running it as a charity was tough due to funding challenges.

Christine noted the need for investment to improve the park. The council had plans to generate revenue from the park but hasn’t followed through. Without investment, the park’s future looks bleak.

Greenwich Council defended its decision, citing financial pressures. A spokesperson mentioned years of budget cuts. They plan to rehome the animals but will allow the community to propose a new plan for the park.

They assured that any changes would be handled carefully to support the local community.
