Join the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra for a captivating concert at Chester Cathedral featuring classic masterpieces and talented soloists
Chester: The Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is gearing up for a concert at Chester Cathedral. It’s happening on Saturday, March 1, at 7:30 PM. Mark your calendars!
They’ll be playing Mahler’s ‘Symphony No. 1’, Mozart’s ‘Flute Concerto No. 1’, and Kaprálová’s ‘Suita Rustica’. Sounds exciting, right?
Jonathan Small will be conducting the orchestra. He’s a well-respected musician. Plus, award-winning flautist Stefano Cucullo will be the guest soloist.
Mahler’s ‘Symphony No. 1’ was composed between 1887 and 1888. It includes some familiar tunes, like ‘Frere Jacques’. The first performance was in Budapest in 1889.
Then there’s Mozart’s ‘Flute Concerto No. 1’, written in 1778. It was commissioned by a Dutch surgeon who loved playing the flute.
Also on the program is ‘Suita Rustica’ by Vitezslava Kaprálová. This year, the orchestra is focusing on female composers, which is great!
Kaprálová was a child prodigy. She started composing at just nine years old. Sadly, she passed away in 1940 but left behind a rich legacy.
Jonathan Small has a lot of experience. He was the principal oboist with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for 40 years. He’s also conducted many orchestras, including one in Finland.
Stefano Cucullo, the guest soloist, won the RLPO International Flute Competition in 2024. He’s performed with various orchestras in Italy.
Diana Anderson, chair of the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra, expressed excitement about the concert. She said it’s a pleasure to welcome Jonathan Small for the first time.
She also mentioned how thrilled they are to have Stefano Cucullo as a soloist. It’s shaping up to be an unforgettable evening!
