Hampshire: Since taking on the role of Police and Crime Commissioner in 2021, I’ve been all about making our roads safer. Dangerous driving and illegal vehicles are serious issues we need to tackle.

One big concern is the illegal use of e-scooters and electric bikes. While they can be eco-friendly, when misused, they really mess things up in our neighborhoods. People are riding them on sidewalks, causing accidents, and they’re often linked to crime.

To combat this, I signed a contract that gives police more power to act. Now, they can seize and destroy e-scooters or e-motorcycles used in criminal activities. This new approach is already showing results.

In 2024, we seized 105 vehicles, which is more than double what we did in 2023. Many of these were linked to serious crimes, including drugs and weapons. By getting these vehicles off the streets, we’re making our communities safer.

I’ve also backed efforts to crack down on illegal car meets. Recently, we disrupted one in Winchester and Alton, seizing nine vehicles. These gatherings can be noisy and lead to dangerous driving, putting everyone at risk.

Last month, we arrested over 300 people during a campaign against drunk and drug driving. In December alone, we caught 152 drivers for drink driving and 170 for drug driving.

As your Commissioner, I hear you loud and clear: you want action against reckless driving. We’re stepping up to improve safety for everyone, from pedestrians to other drivers.

Reporting incidents is easier now too. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is leading the way with quick response times. If you see dangerous driving or illegal vehicles, let the police know. Your tips can help prevent accidents and save lives.

I’ll keep working with officers and the community to ensure we have safer roads across Hampshire.
