Comberton: The plan for a new retirement community in the green belt has been shot down by local councillors. They were worried it would create a “senior ghetto.”

The developer, Endurance Estates, wanted to build 200 care units, claiming there’s a big need for housing for older folks. They even promised some nice facilities like a café and a gym that everyone in the village could use.

But not everyone was on board. Residents and the local GP surgery raised alarms about how this would affect health services. The surgery is already full, and adding hundreds of seniors could make things worse.

Councillors pointed out that Comberton’s population is already aging. Adding more older residents could lead to a situation where a huge chunk of the village is over 65. They felt it was better to spread out supported housing across different areas instead of cramming it all into one spot.

In the end, the councillors unanimously decided to reject the application. They believe that the proposed development just wasn’t the right fit for the community.
