Local councils are slow to revert roads from 20mph to 30mph, raising concerns among officials and motorists alike.
Flintshire County Council and Wrexham Council are now figuring out which roads to change. But, it’s taking longer than expected. So far, no roads have officially switched back.
Sam Rowlands, a Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is worried. He thinks the process is too slow. He has been critical of the 20mph speed limit introduced in September 2023.
Rowlands said many drivers are confused and frustrated. He believes the Welsh Government acted too quickly without a solid plan. He suggests focusing on areas like schools and hospitals for 20mph limits instead.
Recent figures show a drop in crashes in Wrexham and Flintshire since the 20mph limit started. Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, said the goal is to save lives.
He noted that around 100 fewer people were killed or seriously injured on these roads in the past year. Local authorities are now reviewing their 20mph roads based on new guidance and feedback.
