Cornwall MPs are calling out major supermarkets for prioritizing profits over farmers. They cite unfair practices impacting British farming businesses.
The letter mentions a crisis in British farming, stating farmers need a better deal. Supermarkets made over £5 billion profit last year, while many farms make very little money. This situation seems unfair to the MPs.
They worry supermarkets aren’t helping farmers enough and are concerned about “farmwashing.” The MPs argue that some labels mislead customers, making imported goods look like local farm products. They say this misrepresentation hurts family farms.
One MP stated that supermarkets fail farmers. He said farmers sometimes get just 1p profit as supermarkets force down prices of farm goods and mislead shoppers about the origin.
The NFU supports the MPs’ letter and also wants changes to inheritance tax. They want a strong farming sector, valuing fair supply chains and trade laws that should support, not hurt, farmers.
A retail group says they’re playing fair and claim good ties with farmers. They added that independent groups watch over contracts and that they buy lots of British goods, promoting British food clearly.
