Brighton: The council has chosen consultants to design a new King Alfred Leisure Centre on Hove seafront. This is a big step forward for the community.

Cabinet member Alan Robins mentioned that construction will start in 2026, with the centre opening in 2028. The new facility will replace the old King Alfred Leisure Centre.

Alliance Leisure, a top UK leisure development specialist, will lead the project. They have a strong track record, having completed over 260 projects in 25 years.

GT3 Architects will head the design team. They are known for creating energy-efficient sports facilities and have worked with the council before.

The design team also includes Engenuiti, VZDV, and Hadron Consulting. Together, they have experience in building excellent sports and leisure facilities.

Robins expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing the need for a modern, energy-efficient centre that benefits the community.

The council plans to share design updates with the local community before submitting the full planning application. They want to ensure the new centre meets modern standards.

Alliance Leisure’s Tom Fairey said they are thrilled to partner with the council. They aim to create a sustainable and inclusive leisure centre for the community.

While the new facility is being built, the current King Alfred Leisure Centre will remain open as long as possible. The council is committed to maintaining it for residents.

Robins noted that the 80-year-old centre is outdated but still popular. They will keep it operational while working on the new plans.

The council will seek approval for the design and landowner consent in summer 2025. They expect to submit a planning application by the end of 2025.

Construction is set to begin in early 2026, with the new centre anticipated to open in spring 2028.
