The council is looking into potential sinkholes at Blackburn Old Cemetery, ensuring public safety while they investigate.
Blackburn: The council is on the case about some sinkholes at the old cemetery. They’ve noticed a couple of potential issues and are digging into what’s causing them.
This week, they’ll keep investigating at the Whalley New Road site. They’ve even put up security barriers to keep everyone safe while they figure things out.
A local community group, dedicated to restoring the historic cemetery, has been sharing photos of what they’re calling a sinkhole. One picture shows a big hole surrounded by a metal fence, and it’s apparently the larger of two holes.
Tony Watson, who heads the environment department at Blackburn with Darwen Council, mentioned they’re aware of the situation and are working to resolve it quickly. He advised visitors to steer clear of the area for their safety.
Just so you know, sinkholes happen when the ground above collapses, creating a depression. The British Geological Survey says there are different types of sinkholes, caused by things like erosion and collapse.
