Skipton’s council has decided against a 20mph speed limit, citing high average speeds despite community support for safer roads near schools.
Skipton: Recently, there was a push for a 20mph speed limit on Gargrave Road, which is near several schools and a college. A local resident, along with school headteachers, really wanted this change.
Even the Mayor of Skipton, Claire Nash, supported the idea, saying that 20mph limits should be the norm outside all schools in North Yorkshire. She was shocked that there wasn’t more backing for this initiative.
During a recent council meeting, Cllr David Noland mentioned that there had been some delays in making a decision. He said the speed surveys showed an average speed of 34mph, which is pretty high.
He noted that while a full 20mph limit might not be possible right now, having activated signs during school drop-off and pick-up times could be a good compromise.
Gargrave Road is quite busy, with two primary schools and three secondary schools nearby. In fact, a resident named Tom Gunkel even requested a safer zone after witnessing a tragic accident.
Cllr Keane Duncan from the council explained that they’ve done multiple speed surveys and a simple 20mph limit isn’t feasible due to the current speeds. They’re looking into traffic calming measures instead.
They’re also reviewing speed limits around all schools in North Yorkshire, aiming to improve road safety for everyone.
