Morrisons is pushing back against Sainsbury’s plans for a new store in Cromer, claiming it could hurt local business and the town’s economy
Morrisons argues that their location actually brings people into town, especially since their car park is right on the edge of the resort. They think if Sainsbury’s opens up, it could really mess with their business and the town’s vibe.
In their objection, they mentioned that while Sainsbury’s isn’t breaking any rules, they haven’t shown how their new store wouldn’t negatively impact Cromer’s town center. They believe the potential drop in sales at Morrisons could lead to fewer visitors overall.
If Sainsbury’s gets the green light, the two stores will be just about 0.4 miles apart. Morrisons feels that the impact on the town center has been downplayed, especially since local food stores are already struggling.
Sainsbury’s plans to take over 10 Homebase locations and turn them into supermarkets, including the one in Cromer. They say this move will create around 80 jobs, which is a plus for the area.
Meanwhile, Homebase is closing 13 stores across the UK as part of their restructuring, but Sainsbury’s has promised to interview all the affected employees. So, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for the town right now.
