Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue is warning about the dangers of woodburning stoves as incidents rise during colder months
Dorset: The Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is sounding the alarm about woodburning stoves. They’ve noticed a rise in incidents lately, and it’s a bit concerning.
Group manager Neil Tidball mentioned that with the colder weather, folks are turning to their stoves to save on heating costs. But that can lead to some serious issues.
He stressed the importance of sweeping chimneys at least twice a year. It helps clear out soot and tar, which can build up and cause problems.
Also, using green or unseasoned wood is a no-go. It creates a lot of creosote, which isn’t great for heating and can be dangerous.
Creosote build-up can catch fire, and that’s something no one wants. Plus, storing wood too close to the stove can lead to fires igniting from the heat.
Another big risk is blocked chimneys, which can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. So, it’s a good idea to have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
