Mamma Mia star Stevie Docherty is excited to perform in Glasgow, sharing her journey and inspiring young talent in the musical theatre scene
Glasgow: Since it was announced that Stevie Docherty, the West End star from Mamma Mia!, would be performing in her hometown, social media has been buzzing.
She’s been getting tons of messages, especially from young performers excited to sing with her. It’s heartwarming to see how much they look up to her.
Stevie can’t believe it. “I don’t feel special,” she says, “I’m just starting out, so it’s lovely to have that support.”
It’s a bit surreal for her, but she’s loving every moment.
The 23-year-old, who hails from Knightswood, will take the stage at the Theatre Royal on March 2 as part of the Movies to Musicals showcase.
She’ll be performing alongside other talented stars like Lizzie Bea and Alex James Hatton, belting out songs from popular shows like Sister Act and Moulin Rouge.
Stevie is thrilled about the night ahead. “I can’t wait to be back home for a bit,” she says with excitement.
She won her spot in Mamma Mia! through the ITV show I Have a Dream, where her genuine personality and stunning voice won over everyone, even bringing some judges to tears.
Filming in beautiful Corfu, she was crowned the winner and got to play Sophie in the West End production, which is based on ABBA’s music.
For a third-year drama student who initially auditioned just for fun, this is a dream come true.
Stevie grew up singing karaoke and attended Knightswood Secondary. She got her first lead role in a school show, which made her wonder if she was actually good at this.
After some encouragement from a classmate, she decided to pursue musical theatre seriously.
She didn’t get into the Dance School of Scotland on her first try, but that only fueled her determination. The next year, she made it, and it changed her life.
Stevie, who lived in Knightswood until she was nine, moved to Clydebank with her family. Sadly, her mum passed away when she was just 13.
Her mum was an incredible singer, and Stevie often sings her favorite song, Kelly Clarkson’s Because of You, remembering her beautiful voice.
After the show, Stevie plans to head back to London to keep auditioning and also teaches musical theatre to kids aged three to 16.
“They love hearing about Mamma Mia!” she laughs, sharing her journey with them. It’s important for her to show them that it’s possible to follow their dreams, even in a tough industry.
“I’d rather be doing what I love than something stable but miserable,” she says. “Everything is possible if you really want it.”
Movies to Musicals is set for March 2 at the Theatre Royal, and Stevie can’t wait to shine on stage.
