Watch out, drivers! A QR code parking scam is back in Kensington and Chelsea, and it’s causing quite a stir.
The local council has found fake QR codes on parking signs in at least six spots just this January. They’re working hard to take down these phony stickers whenever they can.
The council wants everyone to know they don’t use QR codes for parking payments. If you fall for this scam, you could end up giving your financial info to some shady characters. Plus, you might get hit with parking fines because you didn’t pay the right way.
Recently, these fake codes have popped up around popular areas like Kensington High Street and Sloane Square. Cllr Cem Kemahli, who’s in charge of planning and place, made it clear: if you’re using a QR code to pay for parking here, you’re probably paying scammers, not the council.
Instead, you should use the PayByPhone app or call to pay. The council is doing their best to remove these fake signs quickly, but they want to make sure everyone stays safe from this nasty trick.
This isn’t the first time, either. Last May, they had to warn people about similar scams in Sloane Gardens and Bourne Street. If you see a suspicious QR code, don’t hesitate to reach out to the police or the council. Stay safe out there!
