Deal: A gymnastics club that’s been a staple in the community for over 20 years is facing a tough situation. If Dover District Council goes ahead with its plans, East Kent Acro Gymnastics will lose its home.

The club practices at Tides Leisure Centre three times a week, and parents, kids, and coaches are all speaking out. They want the council to reconsider the closure, which is set to happen for nine months starting April 1.

The council decided to shut down the whole site because the current operator’s lease is ending. This means not just the sports hall, but also the swimming pool and tennis courts will close until January 2026. After that, only the hall and courts will reopen while the pool and gym undergo a major £20 million renovation, which won’t be finished until summer 2027.

With so many people upset, the council is set to review the closure decision in a meeting soon. Parents are worried about how this will affect their kids’ mental and physical health.

One mum, Suze, shared how her daughter Darcie has blossomed since joining the club. She’s seen a big boost in confidence, especially since Darcie struggles with anxiety. Suze believes the club is vital for the community, not just for gymnastics but for other activities too.

Grandad Steve also chimed in, saying his granddaughter Ruby has gained a lot of confidence from attending. He hopes they can find a way to keep the club open.

While the council is looking for alternative venues, coach Charlotte pointed out that moving isn’t as simple as it sounds. They have specialized equipment and years of experience that can’t just be packed up and relocated.

With over 800 signatures on a petition against the closure, the decision is being reviewed. Local council members are pushing for a rethink, emphasizing the importance of the club to the community.

The planned renovations include a new six-lane pool and a bigger gym, but some residents are disappointed that the current slides won’t be replaced. The Labour leader of the council reassured everyone that the review process won’t delay the new facility, which is much needed in Deal.
