Elgin’s Burns Night was a hit, with locals and visitors enjoying a night of Scottish culture, food, and music despite the stormy weather
Elgin: The Mansefield Hotel was buzzing on Friday night for the annual Burns Club Supper. Despite the rough weather, 117 people showed up, including six guests from Canada who are stationed at RAF Lossiemouth.
It was their first taste of Scottish culture, and club president Alistair Campbell was sure they loved it. He mentioned how Burns is still the most famous Scot worldwide, writing about justice, equality, and the beauty of everyday life.
People really connect with his words, both back then and now. Plus, it’s a great chance for everyone to chat and enjoy some good speeches together.
The night kicked off with the Haggis being piped in by Matthew Smith, and Albert Mackenzie delivered the Address to the Haggis. Unfortunately, the original speaker for the Immortal Memory couldn’t make it due to Storm Eowyn, but Davie Small stepped in like a pro.
Carol Stewart proposed the Toast to His Majesty’s Forces, and Lt Col Jamie Walker from 39 Engineer Regiment gave a heartfelt reply. Donald Lunan, another past president, even recited the Address to the Toothache, which added a fun twist to the evening.
Ruth Scott sang two of Burns’ songs beautifully, while the band Whiskers Galore kept the music flowing. It was a night to remember, filled with laughter, good food, and a celebration of Scottish heritage.
