Jessica Evans from Ellesmere College is now a UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador, aiming to inspire her students about democracy and politics.
Shropshire: Jessica Evans, a history and politics teacher at Ellesmere College, has been named a UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador. How cool is that?
She spent three days in Westminster, diving into the workings of Parliament. The goal? To bring that real-life experience back to her students.
During her time there, she got to watch debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. She even had a chat with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons. Talk about a unique experience!
Jessica expressed her excitement, saying it was an honor to represent her school and learn more about the roles of MPs and Lords. She’s eager to share all this knowledge with her students.
She believes this experience will really help her students understand Parliament and democracy better. It’s all about connecting them through active learning.
As part of the program, she met with Helen Morgan, the local MP, and Toby Baillon, a former student who now works as her parliamentary assistant. It’s great to see that connection!
Sir Lindsay Hoyle mentioned that this program is a fantastic way for teachers and politicians to share their experiences. He believes that getting young people involved in democracy is crucial.
Lord McFall, the Lord Speaker, also praised the program, highlighting its positive impact on participants. It’s clear that this initiative is well-regarded.
About 60 educators from all over the UK took part in this year’s program. Fran Jeens from the UK Parliament’s education team noted that many teachers have gone on to inspire countless students about Parliament.
It’s a wonderful opportunity for Jessica and her students, and it’s exciting to see how this will shape their understanding of politics!
