Ely College’s recent production of ‘Oliver!’ wowed audiences, showcasing incredible talent and hard work from students and staff alike
Principal Simon Warburton couldn’t stop praising the students, saying their performance was “worthy of the West End.” He even suggested taking the show on tour, which is a huge compliment!
The cast was made up of students from various year groups. Year 7’s Chloe Lee played Oliver, while Alicia Clough from Year 8 took on the role of the Artful Dodger. It was a real team effort, and the energy was electric.
On the last night, Evie Bennet and Eleanor Wallman, who played Nancy and Bet, gave a heartfelt farewell speech. They reflected on their time at the college and thanked everyone who helped them along the way.
The production was a first for co-directors Jake Newton and Kate Arnold. Ms. Arnold, who also served as the musical director, highlighted how the pit band brought the show to life. The students even rehearsed during lunch breaks to nail their performances.
Asia Glory, who played Mrs. Sowerberry, mentioned how the cast finally came together just before the show. Everyone was fully committed, and it showed in their performances.
Year 11 student Catrin Andrews, who played Widow Corney, expressed her pride in the cast and crew. She emphasized that the magic on stage wouldn’t have been possible without the support of teachers and parents behind the scenes.
Overall, the dedication and passion from everyone involved made ‘Oliver!’ a memorable experience for all. It’s clear that Ely College has some serious talent!
