End of an Era as Skipton Gala Committee Stands Down and Hands Over

Skipton: The Skipton Gala Committee has officially stepped down after years of hard work. They recently handed over last year’s gala proceeds to local charities. It’s a bittersweet moment for everyone involved.

At a gathering held at The Skipton Hotel, they presented donations to various groups like the Skipton Youth Council and Craven Community Boxing Club. It’s great to see the community come together like this.

Geoff Dunn, the committee chair, and gala president Vera Longthorn are retiring after over 30 years. That’s a long time to dedicate to such a beloved event!

Mr. Dunn, now 79, was honored last year as an honorary freeman of Skipton for his dedication. It’s a well-deserved recognition for all his efforts.

Other committee members, like Nicola Fairclough and treasurer Michelle Marren, are also stepping back. Nicola, who’s been volunteering for 11 years, is excited to enjoy this year’s gala as a visitor instead of a committee member.

Michelle has been running the gala for the past eight years, especially working hard to bring it back after the pandemic. She mentioned that after struggling to find volunteers, she decided it was time to pass the baton.

Mr. Dunn assured the town council last year that they would step down after the 2024 event, and the council’s events team will take over. It’s nice to know the tradition will continue.

The Skipton Gala has been a staple for over a century, featuring a colorful procession and a fun-filled day at Aireville Park. It’s a highlight for many locals!

Despite the committee’s struggles to recruit volunteers, the event still attracts thousands who enjoy the festivities. It’s a testament to how much the community loves this gala.

Other groups that received donations included Embsay Pre-school and Skipton Cricket Club. It’s heartwarming to see so many organizations benefit from the gala.
