A mother grieves after a hit-and-run in Pitsea, Essex, tragically claimed the lives of her 16-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, prompting community support.
Two children passed away in a hit-and-run in Pitsea, Essex. Roman Casselden was sixteen, and his sister, Darcie, was nine. Police believe they were riding an e-scooter when a car hit them and did not stop. This happened around 6:25 pm on Saturday.
The community held a vigil Monday night, attended by hundreds of people. Gavin Callaghan, leader of Basildon Council, shared this on social media. People started a fundraiser for the family, which has raised over £29,000 to help with funeral costs.
Police arrested two people after the incident. One woman received bail, and a man was released under investigation.
Hearts Academy Trust mourns the siblings. Both children attended Briscoe Primary School. Don Wry, the chief executive, said they are deeply saddened and sends thoughts to the family. He also remembers their friends. Darcie and Roman were beloved children, and the school feels their loss acutely, supporting those who knew them. The school asks for privacy.
Achievement Through Football also shared their sorrow, saying Roman was a valued team member and noting Darcie was his sister. Roman’s warmth grew over the past year, and his presence will be deeply missed. This special community helps each other.
Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett knows the community wants answers and that the police investigation is progressing well, focusing on several factors. He asks people to avoid speculation online, assuring that police will investigate and find answers.
Police request contact from witnesses and want CCTV or dashcam footage, even doorbell footage. If you have information, call them, referencing incident 931 of February 1.
