Families of two young prisoners who died at Polmont are set to meet with the First Minister to discuss prison conditions and improvements
Katie, just 21, was found dead in her cell in June 2018 while serving time for drink-driving. William, only 16, died in October 2018 after being remanded at Polmont for just three days. Both had histories of mental health struggles, and their families are now seeking answers and improvements in the prison system.
The families’ lawyer, Aamer Anwar, announced the meeting, which is set for Thursday. Afterward, the Justice Secretary is expected to address Parliament about steps being taken to enhance conditions in Scottish prisons. The families are hopeful for change, as they believe the system failed their loved ones.
Anwar has been vocal about the need for accountability, stating that the youths were given a “death sentence” and that some involved should face serious consequences. The Scottish Government has expressed its willingness to meet with the families to discuss these critical issues.
