Omagh: On August 15, 1998, a tragic bombing took the lives of three generations of the Grimes and Monaghan families. Mary Grimes, her daughter Avril Monaghan, and Avril’s young daughter Maura were all victims. They were in Omagh to celebrate Mary’s 66th birthday when the bomb exploded.

During the inquiry, tributes were paid to the victims. Inquiry chair Lord Turnbull spoke about the immense loss. Photos of the family were shared, including ultrasound images of Avril’s unborn twin girls, Eimear and Evelyn.

Fearghal Grimes, Mary’s son, shared memories of his mother. He described her as a caring woman with strong family values. Mary was a nurse and midwife who raised 11 children on a dairy farm. She always welcomed everyone with kindness and good food.

Fearghal recalled the large turnout at their funerals, showing how much they were loved. He emphasized the importance of the values their parents instilled in them. These values helped the family cope with their loss and strive to improve their community.

Aoibheann, Avril’s daughter, spoke about her mother and sister. She remembered Maura as a joyful child with curly hair. Aoibheann shared how her mother loved her family and was nurturing. Tragically, Avril’s life ended too soon, leaving behind three young children.

On that fateful day, the family was excited to celebrate. Instead, they faced unimaginable grief. Aoibheann expressed hope that no other family would endure such pain. She cherishes the memories of her loved ones and believes they are watching over them.
