The community mourns Jane Neasham, a dedicated teacher and advocate, who passed away unexpectedly after surgery, leaving a lasting impact.
Durham: Jane Neasham, just 41, tragically passed away after routine gallbladder surgery at University Hospital North Durham on December 18.
She was a devoted mum to her teenage daughters, Delilah and Emmy, and a passionate campaigner for St Leonard’s, a school hit hard by RAAC issues. Jane worked tirelessly, meeting with politicians and rallying parents to seek solutions.
Her sister Claire shared how Jane was a kind and generous person, making her loss feel even more devastating. Their mum, Gill, echoed this sentiment, noting Jane had so much more to give.
Jane had a long teaching career, working at various schools in County Durham, including a stint in the UAE. She returned to the UK in 2021 to teach at Middlesbrough College.
Her brother Mark recalled a fun night of pool with Jane just before her passing, highlighting her selflessness and strong sense of fairness. He mentioned how she couldn’t stand injustice and always stood up for what was right.
In September 2023, when St Leonard’s faced chaos due to crumbling buildings, Jane stepped up, creating a parents’ WhatsApp group and pushing for action from local politicians.
Mark noted that Jane didn’t have much time or confidence, but she took action anyway. Her husband, Michael, praised her efforts, saying the new school build wouldn’t be as advanced without her dedication.
Jane was remembered fondly by her colleagues, who described her as the best teacher they had ever worked with. Her positive qualities were something her family cherished deeply.
Just days before her passing, Jane attended a comedy event with her family, showing her love for life and laughter. A funeral service held at St Cuthbert’s Church in Shadforth saw nearly 220 people come to pay their respects.
Jane leaves behind her husband Michael, daughters Delilah and Emmy, and her loving family, including her brother, sister, and dog Sponge. A hospital spokesperson confirmed an investigation is underway, extending condolences to her family during this tough time.
